Popularly known by its Arabic honorific, Darul Ehsan, which means "Abode of Sincerity", Selangor surrounds the federal territories of Kuala Lumpur and Putrajaya which were once under territorial sovereignty of Selangor. It has a total area of 8,104 km2 with Shah Alam as its state capital. Geographically, it was divided into districts such as Gombak, Hulu Langat, Hulu Selangor, Klang (including Port Klang, which used to be known as Port Swettenham), Kuala Langat, Kuala Selangor, Petaling (which contains the Sultan Abdul Aziz Shah Airport, also known as Subang International Airport), Sabak Bernam, and Sepang where the Kuala Lumpur International Airport is located. The Sultan of Selangor is the constitutional Ruler of Selangor whereby the role and authority of the Sultan are set forth in the constitution of 1959.

Populated by approximately 5.18 million, the majority Malay’s traditional culture receives the influence of Minangkabau, Bugis, Johor, Mandailing and Javanese ancestry; most of them were Muslims. In districts such as Sabak Bernam, Kuala Selangor, Klang, Kuala Langat and Sepang, Javanese ancestry is more dominant. Chinese and Indians are also two larger minority populations in Selangor.

In terms of economy, Selangor is the largest contributor to the national economy as it contributed more than 20% of the gross domestic product (GDP) in 2013. According to recent news report, in terms of investment, Selangor was the fourth highest in the country with RM 618,723,695 in 2013. Commerce and agriculture are two core sectors of the economy of Selangor. Overall, its economy has been growing progressively year after year.


Nature Tourism
Selangor is also well-known its nature tourism. For people who want to experience the wonders of watching fireflies, Kampung Kuantan Fireflies in Kuala Selangor and Firefly Park Resort Kampung Bukit Belimbing are the must-go destinations. Apart from that, people who enjoy sight-seeing, Sekinchan Paddy Field, Kuala Selangor Nature Park, Broga Hill are some of the highly recommended destinations.

For those who love fishing, the popularly known Kelong Paradise (or Banglo Samudra) is the best place for anglers who want to enjoy a fishing trip in a tranquil environment. Meanwhile for adventure seekers, Skytrex Adventure, Shah Alam, where it provides the first of its kind in Malaysia, a tree to tree ‘sky-trekking’ experience where you can fly, swing and glide on the different aerial obstacles suspended above the lush tropical Malaysian Rainforest.

Golfing Paradise
Some of the best golf courses in Malaysia are located in Selangor. For instance, 18-hole Kota Permai championship course (Kota Permai Golf & Country Club) was designed by first-rate international architect, Ross Watson, which has become one of the best golf courses in Asia. On top of that, other golf courses popularly known amongst golfers for its top-notch golfing course and facility are Mines Resort & Golf Club, Royal Selangor Golf Club (RSGC), Glenmarie Golf and Country Club and Kelab Golf Sultan Abdul Aziz Shah (KGSAAS).

Selangor is also one of the states in Malaysia where numerous top ranking tertiary education institutions are located, giving its residents lots of education options. Selangor also has numerous first-rate medical centres and facilities. KPJ Ampang Puteri Specialist Hospital, KPJ Damansara Specialist Hospital, Sime Darby Medical Centre Subang Jaya, Assunta Hospital, Columbia Asia Hospital (Bukit Rimau) are some of the hospitals that have been recognised by the Malaysian Ministry of Health as health tourism hospitals.
