A QUICK GLANCE AT SELANGOR
Popularly known by its Arabic honorific, Darul Ehsan, which means "Abode of Sincerity", Selangor surrounds the federal territories of Kuala Lumpur and Putrajaya which were once under territorial sovereignty of Selangor. It has a total area of 8,104 km2 with Shah Alam as its state capital. Geographically, it was divided into districts such as Gombak, Hulu Langat, Hulu Selangor, Klang (including Port Klang, which used to be known as Port Swettenham), Kuala Langat, Kuala Selangor, Petaling (which contains the Sultan Abdul Aziz Shah Airport, also known as Subang International Airport), Sabak Bernam, and Sepang where the Kuala Lumpur International Airport is located. The Sultan of Selangor is the constitutional Ruler of Selangor whereby the role and authority of the Sultan are set forth in the constitution of 1959.
Populated by approximately 5.18 million, the majority Malay’s traditional culture receives the influence of Minangkabau, Bugis, Johor, Mandailing and Javanese ancestry; most of them were Muslims. In districts such as Sabak Bernam, Kuala Selangor, Klang, Kuala Langat and Sepang, Javanese ancestry is more dominant. Chinese and Indians are also two larger minority populations in Selangor.
In terms of economy, Selangor is the largest contributor to the national economy as it contributed more than 20% of the gross domestic product (GDP) in 2013. According to recent news report, in terms of investment, Selangor was the fourth highest in the country with RM 618,723,695 in 2013. Commerce and agriculture are two core sectors of the economy of Selangor. Overall, its economy has been growing progressively year after year.
